Kentucky Religious Leaders Meet with Governor to Discuss Casino Game Legalization Kentucky religious leaders recently met with that state’s governor to express their concerns about an expansion of legalized casino game options currently being discussed by legislators. On Thursday, twenty religious
leaders met with Governor Ernie Fletcher to discuss the
potential disastrous effects on Kentucky residents if the
governor allows legislators to legalize a greater array of
casino game options. The meeting on casino game expansion was
closed to the press and public. The meeting lasted for
approximately 40 minutes.
Dr. Bill Mackey, who represented the Southern Baptist Convention in the meeting with the governor, asked why the Kentucky government was considering expanding casino game offerings, when so many other forms of gambling are already offered in the state. "Isn't enough enough? Do you help things by expanding it 16 times? I don't think so. I don't think that's the solution," said Dr. Mackey. Governor Fletcher said after the meeting that "they talked about their concern about casino gambling, and I certainly reaffirmed my position that it's not something I'm supportive or pushing." Kentucky’s governor said that he is not leading the push for expanded casino game gambling, but that he is willing to consider it as a potential way to boost public coffers.
